Movie night turns into gluttony – Part 2

February 13, 2010

The eating didn’t end at Joe Mamas.   Here’s where the “gluttony” begins…

Keith revealed one of our favourite indulgences in Toronto to our friends, Miki and Brad.  The plan was to head home until we realized that (a) they had never tried these heavenly crepes and (b) Brad had NEVER tasted nutella (the Italian staple).  Crazy, I  know!  So we headed north back up John St. to the one and only….

The RestaurantCafe Crepe

The Location: 246 Queen St. West, Toronto

The Menu: Crepes, crepes and more crepes (savoury and sweet).  I’m sure they have other items on the menu (burgers, etc) but when you walk through that door (or walk by in the summer), you are mesmerized by the mouth-watering smell of sweet heavenly crepes and care for nothing else.  There are about 20 variations to choose from.  Of utmost of importance was to get Brad his first taste of nutella.  the waitress was kind enough to bring us a little sampling with a spoon.  Brad took one taste, then another, then another….I think he liked it.

Our Order: These crepes are huge!  So the intent was to order 2 to share and minimize the guilt.  We ordered 4…with ice cream (a necessary evil to get the full experience).

  • Nutella, banana and strawberry crepe (~$7):  Both of the boys chose this one and were clearly on cloud nine.  Brad gave his a 10/10!
  • Dark chocolate, banana and caramel crepe (~$8):  This was my choice and I must admit, a great one .  I cut it down the middle at first, convincing myself that I would only need to eat half.  Silly me.  I left a bite size piece of crepe with melted ice cream hoping that would suffice and subdue the guilt.
  • Strawberry, cognac and sugar (~$6):   Miki went for something simple and fresh.  She enjoyed it but I speak for her when I say, she may alter her decision next time and opt for some chocolate.

The Scene: Think 50’s diner.  The decor and ambiance is not what draws people in.  It’s those darn crepes!

The Damage: ~$30 for all 4.  Worth every fricken penny.

You should go if:

  • You’ve never tried nutella (and are not allergic to hazelnuts)
  • You’re running short on calories for the day and craving something sweet
  • It’s the summer and you have a spare hand.  You can get these crepes to go and walk them off while you’re shopping

Missing Avatar wasn’t such a bad thing afterall.

lesson learned…when going for crepes do not go for simplicity (a.k.a the boring strawberry & sugar concoction i had). next time it’s chocolate or caramel city for me!! a nibble or two off everyone’s elses plate just didn’t cut it ;o)
