Gluten-free restaurants on my “hit list”

June 19, 2010

It’s comforting to know there are other gluten-free (GF) Torontonians out there having success finding GF restaurants.   I just received a note from an old university friend who decided to go gluten-free three years ago.  THREE years!   Hats off to him!   We exchanged our favourite GF finds in Toronto over email and here’s what he revealed…

  1. Waterfalls Indian Tapas Bar & Grill (Kensington Market) – “Their chicken pakora is awesome”.  It’s made with chickpea flour.  Most dishes can be made gluten/dairy-free.  “My fiancée and I like it so much we’re actually hosting our engagement dinner here.”
  2. El Trompo (Kensington Market) – Good Mexican food and tacos are gluten-free.  I (this is Danielle speaking) went years ago and remember really enjoying it, especially its authenticity.  Excited to go back!   Although going sans cheese might put a damper on the Mexican experience as I know it.
  3. Il Fornello (a few locations) – Pastas and pizzas can be made gluten-free.  Good to know!  Magic Oven hasn’t impressed me lately so I’m looking for a GF pizza alternative.
  4. Big Mamma’s Boy (Cabbagetown) – Almost all dishes can be made GF.  He boldly claims that this is “the best gluten-free pizza” he’s ever had!  It’s made with ‘rice cheese’…not sure what to expect from this but I’ll try anything once!  They also have a great Sunday brunch. This place is moving to the top of my “restaurants to try” list.  He had me at “pizza”.
  5. Molly B Gluten Free (they sell to multiple restaurants and have a shop of their own) – You can purchase raw and uncooked gluten-free dough as well as food to prepare at home.  They carry a huge selection of breads, perogies, stuffed crepes, muffins, cakes, and the list goes on…and on.  He notes that the foods are not the healthiest, but they’re tasty.  A fair tradeoff.
  6. Wild Earth Bakery (Beaches) – Good gluten-free and vegan cookies.  No doubt this will be frequented once we make the move to Leslieville.

I’m anxious to give these places a shot.   So many places to eat, so little time!

I can attest to Big Momma’s Boy GF pizza. It’s outstanding!

I find Il Fornello pizza is also better than Magic Oven.

And Wild Earth bakery….yummm! Their GF treats are to die for!
